THINGS WE DO THAT DEMOTIVATE MOTIVATED CHILDREN

Avoid beginning lessons with administration routines that turn the pupils off the learning from the outset. Copying down an objective can be a quick way to lose the natural anticipation and energy that pupils might automatically bring to a lesson. Instead, start lessons with a tantalising mystery or challenge that requires immediate attention and use this as a way to help learners engage with the learning objective instead.

Think carefully about the nature and purpose of the questions you are asking. If you are simply looking for one specific answer and the learners find themselves trying to guess what is in your head, they can quickly become frustrated and disinterested. Likewise, if you leave no time after your questions for learners to actually think about their response, they could easily become demotivated. Instead, ensure that your questions are designed to either ascertain what pupils are thinking or to cause them to think. Make a habit of pausing to allow thinking time during a question-and-answer session.

Rather than overloading learners with new information that they feel little personal connection to, encourage them to engage with the topic first by asking them to predict what will happen before a demonstration or guess the answer before it is revealed. You might even like to try covering up a section of a text or diagram and asking learners to use their knowledge and imagination to envisage what lies beneath.
